Talking to Subordinates.

If you’re working in a business, you’ll have to deal with all kinds of people and that includes your subordinates too. When you talk to your subordinates you will have to talk to them so they remain encouraged and focused. You might have to resolve issues, and tell them about tasks too.

In this video, we’ll learn some phrases that you can use to talk to your subordinates. Listen to the conversations and practice the phrases.

Hi there! Glad to see you, dear viewer. Many of us work in offices and have subordinates reporting to us. We need to give them tasks, get reports, give feedback and communicate with them about a lot of other things. It’s hard, isn’t it?

But don’t worry, you can improve your office communications if you practice. So in this lesson we will see conversations related to offices and talking to subordinates.

Got a New Project.

Sam : Excuse me Kate. You have a minute?

Kate : Sure, Sir. What can I do for you?

Sam : I just want to update you about the new project we’ve been assigned.

Kate : But the previous one isn’t finished yet.

Sam : Yes, I know. You told me it’ll be done by the next weekend, so we’ll start working on the next one after that.

Kate : Okay, I am worried about delays though.

Sam : Don’t worry Kate, I saw the status, this one’s almost done. You’ll finish it comfortably.

Giving the Deadline.

Robert : Check your mail Luke. You’ve got a new assignment.

Luke : I saw that. It involves a lot of traveling. Is there a deadline?

Robert : In fact there is… You gotta give me the finished report by 12th Jan.

Luke : That gives me 10 days to finish it.

Robert : Yes. Enough time I am sure.

Luke : Yes Sir. Enough time. Don’t worry, I’ll sort it out.

Encouraging Your Subordinate.

Robert : Alright! I saw this month’s performance charts. You’ve been doing pretty good lately.

Sam : Thanks! That telephone marketing training I got has helped a lot.

Robert : Yeah! I guess it worked. Mark my words, if your conversions continue to be this high, you’re all set to be the team leader next quarter.

Sam : It feels good to hear such words.

Robert : I bet it does. Just stay focused. If you need anything just let me know.

Reprimanding for a Silly Mistake.

Luke : What’s wrong with you Kate?

Kate : What happened Luke? Did I do something wrong?

Luke : The financial report you sent me last night has a number of silly mistakes. The expenditures have been posted to wrong accounts, and the balance sheet is incorrect.

Kate : Is that so? But I spent the entire afternoon correcting all the issues. I made sure there were no mistakes. Looks like I mailed you a wrong copy.

Luke : Are you kidding me? You didn't check the document before pressing that send button? I was working late night yesterday and I wasted an hour finding errors in that balance sheet.

Kate : Luke, I’m really sorry! Please give me a minute, I’ll send you the correct copy.


Vocabulary

Update you : When you update someone about something, you tell them about something new that has happened.

Sort it out : Sort it out is an idiom which means to fix something, or resolve an issue. When you say you will sort out some pending work, it means you will find a way to finish it.

Deadline : The deadline is the date on which you need to submit the finished work.

Mark my words : When you say ‘mark my words’ you want the listener to pay importance to what you are saying.

Stay focused : When you’re focused, you are concentrating on the work. To stay focused is to continue being concentrated.

Posted to accounts - Posting is an accounting term. It means to make a record of a financial transaction in your accounting system.
